Spirometry

Description: One component of the pulmonary function screen that determines lung size and rate at which a patient can breathe air in and out.
Test: A single breathing test will be performed and repeated to show consistency of results. The function of the lungs will be measured by breathing out forcefully through a mouthpiece into a recording device.
Length of Time: Approximately 10 minutes.
Preparation: Do not take inhalers for 4-6 hours prior to scheduled appointment unless symptoms warrant usage or otherwise instructed by physician. Refrain from eating a large meal at least one hour prior to tests. Refrain from smoking at least one-hour prior to test.
