Oxygen Prescription by Ergometer with Arterial Line

Description: To assess the need for supplemental oxygen treatment. If the patient is already breathing supplemental oxygen, this test is used to determine if the current level of oxygen is adequate.
Test: The patient will pedal on a stationary bicycle for as long as s/he can. The patient will pedal for approximately 10 minutes. A small thin tube (similar to an IV) will be placed in an artery (either at the wrist or the elbow) to allow blood samples to be taken through out the exercise test. After a 30-minute rest period the patient will perform a second exercise test breathing added oxygen.
Length of Time: Approximately 3 hours.
Preparation: Eat a regular breakfast/lunch and drink plenty of fluids. No
restrictions on medications. Wear loose-fitting clothes (sweats) and comfortable running shoes. Notify the technician if currently taking anti-coagulation (blood thinner) medication.
