Lung Compliance

Description: To determine if the lungs are too stiff, or if the lung springs are "sprung."
Test: I will swallow a small catheter (IV tube) with a thin balloon on the end. The balloon will be positioned in the swallowing tube (esophagus) just above the stomach. The amount of pressure in the balloon will be measured during different size breaths.
Length of Time: Approximately 2 hours.
Preparation: Eat a regular breakfast/lunch and drink plenty of fluids. No
restrictions on medications. Wear loose-fitting clothes (sweats) and comfortable running shoes. Do not take any inhalers 12 hours prior to scheduled appointment.
