Exercise - with Arterial Line

Description: To monitor lung and heart function while exercising at gradually increasing workloads to a maximal level.
Test: The patient will be asked to pedal on a stationary bicycle for as long as s/he can while breathing into a machine. The patient will pedal for approximately 10 minutes. A small thin tube (similar to an IV) will be placed in an artery (either at the wrist or the elbow) to allow samples of blood (2 mL or 1 teaspoon) to be taken throughout the exercise test. Then, the patient will perform a test in the sitting position while breathing oxygen and an additional blood sample will be taken. After a 30-minute rest period, the patient will perform a second shorter exercise on the bicycle. During this test, the patient will be asked to breathe in deeply and then to breathe out forcefully through a mouthpiece into a recording device.
Length of Time: Approximately 3 hours.
Preparation: Eat a regular breakfast/lunch and drink plenty of fluids. Wear loose-fitting clothes (sweats) and comfortable running shoes. No restrictions on medications. Notify the Pulmonary Fellow if currently taking anti-coagulation (blood thinner) medication.
