Exercise - Bloodless with Screening Protocol for Induced Asthma

Description: To determine if symptoms (shortness of breath, chest tightness, etc.) are instigated by exercise.
Test: The patient will pedal on a stationary bicycle for as long as s/he can while breathing dry air. The patient will pedal for approximately 10 minutes. A series of short breathing tests will be performed immediately after the exercise test. Spirometry testing or measurement of airway resistance will be performed every five minutes for about 30 minutes to measure the change in ability to breathe out forcefully. The resistance to airflow in and out of the airways will be measured in a body plethysmograph (a chamber like a telephone booth) used to measure the resistance of air moving in and out of the airways while panting gently. After a 30-minute rest period, the patient will perform a second shorter exercise on the bicycle.
Length of Time: Approximately 2 hours.
Preparation: Eat a regular breakfast/lunch and drink plenty of fluids. Wear loose-fitting clothes (sweats) and comfortable running shoes. Do not take any antihistamines or bronchodilators for 12 hours prior to the test. Be sure to discuss proper preparation for the test with the Pulmonary Fellow prior to scheduling your appointment by calling (415)476-8493.
